
We are pleased to officially announce the rollout of MailScanner to all cPanel hosting accounts, including reseller accounts. This powerful tool enhances email security by combining multiple utilities to protect against spam and viruses, ensuring a safer email experience for all our users.
What is MailScanner?
MailScanner is an advanced anti-spam and anti-virus suite designed to reduce the volume of unwanted emails and malicious threats that reach your inbox. It integrates several robust utilities, including:
- MailScanner: Core processing engine for email scanning.
- SpamAssassin: Advanced spam detection tool.
- ClamAV: Open-source antivirus engine.
- DCC (Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse): System for detecting email spam.
- Vipul’s Razor: Collaborative spam filtering network.
Together, these components provide a comprehensive email protection solution.
Key Features of MailScanner
- Spam Scanning: Identifies and processes emails suspected of being spam.
- Virus Scanning: Detects and removes malicious attachments from emails.
- Customizable Handling Rules: Offers flexible configurations for low and high-scoring spam.
- Email Whitelisting and Blacklisting: Allows users to specify trusted senders and block unwanted ones.
- Spam Score Thresholds: Enables fine-tuning of spam detection sensitivity.
- MailControl Tool: Provides a user-friendly interface to review and manage blocked emails.
How to Configure MailScanner
Follow these steps to set up MailScanner for your domains:
Login to cPanel
Access your hosting account's cPanel interface.
Navigate to MailScanner
In the "Mail" section, click on the MailScanner icon.

Mailserver Configuration Screen
On this screen, you’ll find two main sections:
Configurable Settings
Spam Scanning
Enable or disable spam scanning for your emails. Options: Yes/No.
Virus Scanning
Enable or disable virus scanning. Options: Yes/No.
Deliver Cleaned Emails
Choose whether to deliver emails from which viruses have been removed.
Low Scoring Spam
Specify actions for emails flagged as low-scoring spam. Options: Deliver, Delete, or Forward to a designated spam address (e.g., spam@yourdomain.com).
High Scoring Spam
Define actions for emails flagged as high-scoring spam. Options: Deliver, Delete, or Forward to a spam address.
Example Spam Handling:
- Low Spam Score Threshold = 5
- High Spam Score Threshold = 10
- Scoring Rules:
- 1-4: Delivered normally.
- 5-9: Handled as low-scoring spam.
- 10+: Handled as high-scoring spam.
Email Blacklist and Whitelist
Spam Whitelist
Add trusted email addresses or domains to always allow delivery. Format: *@domain.com
or name@domain.com
.
Spam Blacklist
Block specific email addresses or domains. Format: *@domain.com
or name@domain.com
.

Advanced Settings
Spam Scoring System
Configure thresholds for low and high spam scores and specify actions for flagged emails. For example:
- Low Scoring Threshold: 5
- High Scoring Threshold: 20
- Forward Spam to an Additional Email Address.

MailControl Tool
The MailControl tool allows you to:
- View emails flagged as spam and not delivered.
- Sort emails by category: Low Spam, High Spam, Infected, Blacklist.
- Release or mark emails as safe ("Learn as Ham").

Managing Blocked Emails
- Click on the View/Status column to examine blocked emails.
- Use the Learn as Ham button to mark emails as non-spam.
- Use the Release (Direct) button to deliver an email to the original recipient.

If the email you are viewing is not spam, you can click on the Learn as Ham button at the bottom of the page, in the Actions block to "teach" MailScanner that it is not spam:

If you would like to have the email delivered to the original recipient, click on the Release(direct) button:
